In front of the Stellenbosch Town Hall you’ll find a public art tribute to Nelson Mandela.
Artist Strijdom van der Merwe designed our town’s Nelson Mandela Square and it’s crafted from iron silhouettes of Mandela’s face applied to two sides of a wall with a bench, which are illuminated at night.
The eastern side shows a map of the eastern part of South Africa with places of importance in Mandela‘s life; including Qunu, Rivonia, Johannesburg and more. While the western side echoes this treatment.
A quote from Nelson Mandela’s first opening of parliament speech connects the wall with the bench: “Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another.”
